Wafa Alobaidat: How British Council Helped me Succeed in Business

Wafa Alobaidat is a young, successful entrepreneur with numerous business ventures under her belt and a long, bright future ahead of her. Her journey of building her business officially started when she registered for a preparation course to take her IELTS at the British Council.

Soon after, she was admitted to the Chelsea College of Art and Design where she began to build the foundation for her business. Obai & Hill, a PR and Design agency based in Bahrain, was originally founded in London when Alobaidat was still a young, budding student. Soon after moving back to Bahrain and taking her business venture with her, she became known as one of the most successful businesswomen in the GCC. Years later, she was invited by the British Council to attend the Dubai-London Enterprise week, an initiative to benefit and develop young entrepreneurs through a series of intercultural networking, workshops and opportunities to connect with our great business minds.

“Through the various initiatives and resources that I have personally gained from the British Council, I would recommend the institution to anyone in Bahrain who would like to develop their careers,” says Alobaidat. “From the IELTS prep courses to their events and workshops, I believe it is essential for everyone to take advantage if they are serious about getting ahead. People have lost business deals due to their incapability of communicating their ideas in English, and with the presence of the British Council, there is really no excuse for that.”

Bahrain is home to a culturally diverse group of people accounting for over 60 percent of the population. Many business owners, including Alobaidat, consider proficiency in English as a required skill for all employees.

“It’s as basic as being able to count,” concludes Alobaidat.
