The German-Saudi Arabian Liaison Office for Economic Affairs (GESALO) in partnership with Tamkeen and StartUp Bahrain, held its second version of Start.Up! Germany Pitch Night on Thursday, September 6th. The event saw ten startups battle it out in front of expert jury members from top German, Bahraini, and Saudi institutions for an all-expense paid one-week guided startup tour in Germany.
GESALO is an organization that is a part of the German Chamber Network, that offer their experience, connections, aid, and services to German as well as foreign companies. GESALO aims to build connections with the Gulf in order to bring Germany closer to the region – in this case, sending winning startups for a Germany tour.
The event held in two sessions, the first being Smart Cities and the second Mobility/Logistics saw two winners from each – making it a total of four:
- Nakheel, a by Bahraini-based startup that recently graduated brinc’s accelerator program and founded by Mohamed Khalil, that uses AI to detect early Red Palm Weevils in date palm trees.
- FalconViz, a Saudi-based startup founded by Anas Dahlawi in 2015 and is the product of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology. Falconviz use unmanned aerial systems (UAS) to create 3D modeling, surveying, and mapping.
- Sprent, first launched in Riyadh 2016 by Mahmoud Haji, Sprent is a logistics app that lets you buy and send whatever through a “sprenter.”
- Hommycook, founded by Ahmed Tohamy in 2017, and with aid of the Flat6labs accelerator program, Hommycook is a food delivery app that lets people order home cooked meals instead of the standard restaurant and fast food.
The winning startups traveling to Germany, will discover diverse opportunities in one of Europe’s biggest economies, explore and visit some of Germany’s major startup hotspots. They’ll even get to attend the RuhrSummit in Bochum – one of Germany’s significant startup events, to meet and connect with some of the industries biggest influencers.
