UoB and GDG to offer free training programs to students in Bahrain

The University of Bahrain (UoB) partners up with Google Developers Group (GDG) Manama to offer training programs for students in Bahrain.

The courses are offered through the university’s newly launched coding academy, which is open to all university students around the country, regardless of their majors. The program was launched to help students familiarize themselves with some of the emerging technologies out there, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), machine learning, Data Science, and Web Technologies.

Wondering what’s in it for students? Well, aside from gaining knowledge, and networking with people, the students will be receiving certificates upon successfully completing the program. That’s not the exciting part though! The certificate will be issued through blockchain technology – making UoB one of the first universities globally to issue digital diplomas. Awesome right?

UoB president Prof Riyad Hamzah talks about the importance of the program stating: “The only way forward in delivering the skilled workforce needed to lead the rise in the digital and entrepreneurial ecosystem is through collaboration and by thinking big.”

He adds that the new courses will benefit students especially since it will be replacing traditional learning and encourage multi-disciplinary learning. In addition, Prof Riyad Hamzah said that the coding academy will pave the way for a creative and and innovation/technology-driven economy.

Founder of GDG Manama Lana Al-Attar mentioned to StartUp Bahrain: “This initiative had 3 forces of nature come together, Google Developer Group Manama, AIESEC Bahrain and The University of Bahrain. Together, we have delivered hands-on training in cutting edge technologies and provide the skills, tools, and resources for these students to go forth and build us a better tomorrow. I’m very excited to see how they shape our future with their experience.”
