Developing an Entrepreneurial Culture

As part of its objectives, Tamkeen strives to support the developing of an entrepreneurial mindset in the Kingdom, and to support Bahraini creativity and innovative belief process through the various youth programmes, that encourage innovative thinking in business. Tasked with developing Bahrain’s private sector and positioning it as the key driver of economic development, Tamkeen

The need for an ambitious and collaborative approach to developing an entrepreneurial haven is apparent when we look at the nature of today’s innovation. Based on this need, Tamkeen has developed several programmes that focus on nurturing these ideas and creating the right environment that promotes business thinking and an ambitious business outlook.

Tegdar was one those programmes, which aimed to develop basic life skills, and create a culture of leadership amongst the future generation of Bahraini entrepreneurs, and discover opportunities through their surrounding environment. Developed in cooperation with the General Organisation for Youth and Sports, the programme aimed at providing guidance to the youth in an interesting manner and to build awareness of their own professional capabilities through a culture of leadership and an air of ambition. More than 200 Bahraini students have benefited from this experience

Tegdar provided the participants with training and practical experience on various business models, where the Bahraini youth were involved in the project management phase and the design of the business model. The programme also required that participants also go through the experience of actual implementation of various business projects. Participants were also required to prepare an  initial study of the needs and coordinate with companies within the private sector and prepare a marketing strategy for the programme and start an advertising campaign to market their ideas.

Tamkeen’s Mashroo3i is another such programme. The Youth Business Plan Competition, “Mashroo3i”, aims to instill and promote entrepreneurial culture within the next generation of Bahrainis. Tamkeen’s Mashroo3i Youth Business Awards engaged young Bahrainis in a business plan development and prototyping competition. Over a period of three months, contestants received training from mentors and experts in various fields, and got inspired to consider entrepreneurship as an option for their future career.

Tamkeen’s Mashroo3i Youth Business Plan competition culminated in a grand finale with a public exhibition of the participants’ business prototypes and award ceremony which took place at Bahrain City Centre last April of this year.

More than 180 Bahraini students participated and benefited from the training  in the Mashroo3i experience.

For the second consecutive year, Tamkeen has partnered with the Information Affairs Authority, as a strategic partner for AlMohema, which is another programme that was aired on Bahrain Television, as a reality show that aims at instilling a spirit of competitiveness, effectiveness and  forward thinking amongst the youth. During the programme, participants were faced with unique challenges and had to prove their abilities in providing business solutions. Each participant took part in workshops, underwent intensive training sessions, competitions and came up with solutions related to the establishment of a business.

The programme targeted Bahrainis, undergraduates or post-graduates between 18-30 years, who were selected to participate live in the programme.  Each contestant participated in workshops, underwent intensive training sessions, competitions and came up with solutions related to the establishment of a business. More than 300 Bahrainis

Developing and nurturing an entrepreneurial culture amongst the new generation will turn them from job seekers to job creators. An entrepreneurial culture describes a skill and mind-set characterised by innovation, creativity and calculated risk-taking. Tamkeen continues to develop programme structures that foster that mind-set. A big part of driving a business minded culture is creating the environment where people can work like entrepreneurs, where people empower themselves. To act entrepreneurially, people must feel empowered to take the lead and create a positive change.
