The 6-Step Guide to Help Young Bahrainis Land a Job

Think you’ve done everything you can to find a job? Take it from an expert—there’s more. Here’s everything you should be doing.

I’m an entrepreneur, coach, and business owner, and I meet (and interview) young Bahrainis regularly. The most common complaint I get from them is, “I can’t find a job.” Here’s what I tell them.

  1. Know what you’re looking for. Many people say they don’t care what job they get as long as it’s a secure job. If you don’t have a clear goal, how will you ever achieve it? If you’re not sure what you want to do, work on figuring it out. Better now than when you’re 40!
  2. Do your research. Know who the major (and minor) players are in your industry, and understand what they do. This will help you formulate a clear picture of the type of position to look for.
  3. Do it full-time. The best job-hunting advice I received when I was in university was, “When you are looking for a job, THAT should be your full-time job.” Spend a good amount of time every day on job-searching tasks like perfecting your CV, registering on all local job sites, and researching the companies you want to work for.
  4. Don’t be afraid to stalk them. If you have a clear idea of where you want to work—go there! Call them. Apply directly to the person who would be your potential boss. Don’t just depend on their HR e-mail or online portal.
  5. Don’t give up. It’s a game of numbers, so don’t get disappointed. You will apply to many jobs and sit for numerous interviews before landing the job of your dreams. The process you go through will teach you a lot and contribute to your personal development, so don’t let rejection get you down.
  6. Start somewhere. If you are still finding it challenging to land a job even while doing everything you think you can, consider doing something temporary that will enhance your profile (and CV). Completing an internship or studying for a professional certification in your field will prove very beneficial. Keep on searching for a job even while you are doing these other things.
