Apple and Amazon might soon launch in a GCC country, read on to find out where

Two sources told Reuters that Apple and Amazon are interested in investing in Saudi Arabia. A third source confirmed that Apple was meeting with SAGIA, Saudi Arabia’s foreign investment authority.

Even though both companies already sell their products in Saudi Arabia, it is however done via third parties. Therefore,  Amazon and Apple aim to establish a direct presence in the country.

Amazon’s discussions are mainly being led by the cloud computing division Amazon Web Services (AWS). AWS will be introducing stiff competition in Saudi Arabia’s market which is currently dominated by smaller local providers like STC and Mobily.

For the past two years, Riyadh has been working towards easing their regulatory impediments, including limits on foreign ownership which have kept investors away. In addition, this is in alignment with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s vision to transform Saudi into a high-tech country.
