Dubai Government Taps IBM For City-Wide Blockchain Pilot Push

According to CoinDesk, the city of Dubai is creating new partnerships to become the world’s first “blockchain-powered government”. IBM officially joined as its “blockchain strategic partner”, while Brooklyn-based ethereum startup ConsenSys, in turn, will be the blockchain city advisor.

In specific, IBM routinely will build on its Fabric distributed ledger, overseen by the Linux-led Hyperledger group, while ConsenSys will work on a private implementation based on the ethereum blockchain.

According to a rep from the Smart Dubai office, Dubai intends to be vendor neutral, noting the “technicalities” of both offerings. Dubai’s government wants to move its operations and processes to blockchain systems, “a move that will find agencies as diverse as Dubai Tourism, the Dubai Health Authority and the Dubai Police leveraging the technology as part of a city-wide push to modernize and digitize by 2020“, according to the article.

Dubai is eager to build a blockchain pilot by next year through trials on the city’s residents.
